More on Rachel and Grandma and an Arabian Horse Part 6

The Rachel and Grandma and an Arabian Horse series begins with the original post. Yesterday's post is the beginning of current happenings in the series is More on Rachel and Grandma and an Arabian Horse
I decided the best way to deal with Rachel was to speak with her mother first to see what see knew. As I had suspected Rachel had told her mother the night before that she was supposed to be at the barn at 9 o'clock. The other issues I had concerns about turned out to be about the same.

I told Colleen not to say anything to Rachel. Grandma would deal with this on her own the following day. Colleen and Rachel have their own issues, I didn't want things to get muddied up in the middle of mine.

Believe it or not, Rachel overslept again the next morning. This time, however, she did call me to tell me she had overslept. At least we weren't adding anymore fuel to the fire. I made arrangements for her to met me at the barn and hour later than our schedules time. It was just as well, I had overslept too that morning.

When I did arrive at the barn, Rachel had the Arabian horse all saddled up and ready to ride. The horse was still having some problems with stiffness to the right and it took a while to get him through them. Once I did, I put Rachel up on the horse and again we headed for the corner.

Each day in the corner Rachel was getting more control over the horse and each day I was asking her to step it up a notch. This day was no exception. As she began with the exercises as good or better than the last time she had really worked on it (yesterday's half assed attempt had been useless), I showed her how to round out her circles and get rid of the flat X in the middle of her figure eight, thus pushing the horse even farther up under himself.

At first Rachel had trouble understanding my directions. Her dyslexia can get things pretty jumbled sometimes. Normally I do ok with the frustration of finding 16 different ways to convey the same set of instructions but today, with the anger I felt over being lied to, I was struggling. I decided to tell Rachel that I was finding it difficult to be patient when I felt so angry. After her ride we would have to talk.

  3. oh wow, it must be hard working with a dyslexic person! doesn't that make it hard to read and write with numbers and letters though?? I don't think I'd ever want to work with a dyslexic person.. I wouldn't know how.

  4. You seem to be doing a good job of walking the fine line between keeping her accountable and discouraging her, which is a hard goal!
