The Pineapple Express

According to the latest weather predictions a weather system known as the Pineapple Express is heading our direction bringing with it one of the worst storms our state has seen in years. . Once the system reaches us it is expected to dump 1 - 3 inches of rain in the lowlands and 5 to somewhere in the double digits in the mountains, which just would happen to be us, in the first twenty four hours.

Since this system originates in Hawaii, it brings with it warmer temperatures which means high avalanche danger in the mountains along with some snow melting. Between the snow melt and high rain flood warnings are posted for all counties on the west side of the mountains.

That means we're in the flood preparation stages here checking gutters and drains, making sure we channel what water we can away from our barns. Our already swollen creek will be transformed into a raging river by this time tomorrow night and I'm pretty sure the front half of the farm next door will be under water because it's very saturated now.

It always amazes me, the power Mother Nature has to transform us so dramatically from one day to the next. The images of our recent snowfall are still emblazoned in my mind and now we're heading another direction with spring like flooding.

Who knows what's coming next but I'll be working tomorrow night. Dave and Lindsay will have to get through the first half of this one alone. Cross your fingers and hope the weather forecasters have not under estimated this storm as they did the last one or western Washington could be in for quite a ride.

This picture is of flooding here two winters ago. Before that time we really hadn't seen flooding much on our farm. Unfortunately it looks like it's becoming a regular occurence here lately. I sure wish our weather patterns would go back to the way they were.

  1. Sending prayers that you will be safe! I know what it's like to be flooded. Our house was flooded by a tropical storm up from Mexico back in 1979. I was alone (hubby was in Los Angeles, working) and PREGNANT! ACK! No fun!

  2. Oh my goodness, I wonder if we're going to get it, too. We had record snow fall for November--25.9". Right now it's all melting, so if we got rain, too, with a frozen ground, we'd be in trouble.

  3. I heard the phrase "Pinapple Express" for the first time earlier this week on the news. We have a lot properties in the North East that suddenly become lake or riverfront properties in the Spring as the snow melts.
