More on the Plunge

I know I mentioned recently that I Took the Plunge I've begun working out at a gym to build my core strength.

At that time some of you asked for updates. I thought now would be as good a time as any to fill you in even though it's only been a couple of weeks since I started with this new routine.

The getting up in the morning at 4:30 to make it to the gym has been the most difficult part for me. I'm sure the alarm must go off at the scheduled time but somehow I never get my eyelids open before 4:45. That makes an arrival time at the gym of 5 am just a tad bit tight.........but I'm getting there 5 days a week.

Even though I didn't take the bait and spring for a personal trainer, I am managing to figure out some of what I'm supposed to be doing. I'm currently doing cardio work on the elliptical machine for twenty minutes. Then I do a couple of resistance things on the machines........one for abs and one for legs. Then on to some crunches for my arms with 7.5 lb weights. The rest of the time I'm spending on the stability ball working on my core strength. I've upped my repetitions to double sets.

I'm going to have to change my cardio workout soon. I understand I need to rotate every two weeks or my body will quit responding to the workout. That would really suck. It's hard enough making myself push through without it being for nothing.

I haven't been anywhere near a scale since that's not really my primary objective (although I sure would be happy to loose about 35 pounds.) But I can tell you that I am already able to tell a difference in the use of my legs when I am riding. At this rate, I may be able to hang up those spurs because I'll have enough leg strength to do just fine without them.

It occurred to me today when I was riding Legs that he actually felt differently between my legs because of my newly acquired strength. Just this little improvement is enough to keep me on this path. I'm all for anything that will improve my riding and it's clear that is beginning to happen. So I guess as much as I hate this type of exercising, I'll be keeping my 5:00 am date for quite a while.

  1. Oh boy... I keep telling myself that I need to start working out. Finding the time is my main problem. Not that I have a horse to ride right now or a place to ride one at... But keeping in shape would be good since it's been a year since I've ridden anything. :)

Keep it up! I'm so glad that you're able to see or 'feel' results in so short of time. Just think about how good you'll feel in another month. :)

  3. Congratulations and good for you for sticking with it. I don't think I could ever get up that early and go to the gym. Especially now that it's getting cold and it's so dark outside. I give you a lot of credit, you're really motivated.

  4. Good for you for getting up that early to go to the gym! Wow.

Getting some results is what helps keep us going. That's great that you are feeling a difference in your riding already!

I need to start a similar routine myself...
