a day for the fallen

I worked horses this morning but my heart wasn't in it. I really wanted to be at the memorial service for the fallen officers from the Lakewood Police Department. The second outrageous attack on police officers in western Washington in less than a month I cannot help but feel affected. What is this world coming to that some think its ok to kill another person just because he/she wears a badge.

I have family who wear that badge. The Lakewood PD fill in when the Pierce County Sheriff are short handed for my neighborhood. These very officers have driven my streets at one time or another keeping things safe. These officers were part of my community.

When I finished my load of horses, I turned my attention to the memorial service. I figured it was the least I could do for people who gave their lives protecting people like me.

As I watched I couldn't help but feel the helplessness one feels in times such as this. Such a senseless act caused this ripple felt around the world. If only there was something I could do to make it better........ or make some sense of it. Yet, I know there will never be any sense to it. I will never understand how one man can perpetuate evil upon another.

It just didn't seem right to sit down at my computer and put aside the importance of today. This day of tribute to those four fallen officers who died nine days ago...........doing their job protecting their community.........my community.

The heaviness in my heart is not even measurable next to that in the hearts of the family and friends of these fallen. The memorial service may now be over..............their grief is only beginning.

  1. I am so sorry about the murdered officers. I understand they left nine children behind between the four of them. They were three very brave men and a brave woman. We are poorer for their loss.

  2. So tragic and sad.

This is going to be one terribly heartbreaking Christmas for those families who were left behind. I hope the community rallies around them and takes care of those families, who were generous enough to share their loved ones so they could serve and protect as police officers.

Rest in Peace to those officers.
