A Different Sort of Rescue Story - Thoughts

Part 1

OK, I've got to be upfront here and admit I've probably jumped to some conclusions here. I've been caught at least a couple of times in this series and I find the "reporter" within me cringing. I know better.

With that said, I got a call from John Edwards from Hope for Horses today. He asked me if I was interested in the other side of the story. Because I believe myself to be a fair person, I think it's only right that I give him that chance.

While we only had a brief conversation, I could see where there are communications issues with the three parties involved. Maybe the opinion I have drawn is affected by that. I would like to know more so I am going to speak with Mr Edwards and see if I can understand their point of view.

In the meantime I'm going to discontinue posting on this issue. It's clear from the comments that I am not the only one making assumptions and also I have led some of you along with me. I don't want to be responsible for "assuming" any more things that are not accurate nor misrepresenting anything. A lot of damage can be done that way and that was never my intention.

This, however, does not change my opinion that the two horses, Valor and Teddy, should never have been taken from Rose Corey's. The horses have thrived on her and Kelsey's care.

As for Hope for Horses there is a lot I don't know. I have lots of questions, tough questions and so far Mr Edwards has expressed an interest in answering those questions. He would also like people to know about the other horses that were rescued from that Waller Road atrocity that Valor and Teddy Bear came from. I think I'd like to know more about them too. So I'm going to take the time to give him the chance.......until then I'm going to open my mind to see if I can learn something.

The fact that I am open to more information doesn't change my opinion that the county made a royal mess out of this thing. They were not then, nor are they now, equipped nor prepared to deal with the rescue of horses. Finding a solution for THAT problem is really what was at the bottom of my posting about this subject in the first place. I think if the problems at the county level can be cleared up, things will be better for all concerned.

With the economy being as it is, this is a horrible time for horses. Having a county not set up to deal with this issue is a very sad situation under normal circumstances. At times like these it is devastating for horses and my guess is for the rescues as well. I sure don't want to add to their problems because I've only written one side of the story.

To be continued............

  1. I hope you've been doing your homework and ask the pertinent questions. Good luck in getting full and frank responses!

  2. Horses like many other animals are abused and mistreated by people who sit across from you in church. It is a bewildering life we live and I hope it changes, but I doubt it will.

I hope 2009 will be better than 2008, 2007, and 2006. I do think our government will be inspired by our new President Obama -- at least I hope so.

I would like to see the War in Irag end and I would like to see the killing stop everywhere.

It is my hope that Japan will stop slaughtering whales and raping virgin forests.

And I hope the people will lose their clubs and no longer club baby seals to death.

What a world we have and live in. 2009 could be so much better than it will be.

  3. Thanks for posting the series. It brought information to many. It is great that HFH called and wanted to share their side of the story and even better that you are willing to listen to it. You continue to be an amazing person Mikael and I feel privelaged to have gotten to know you through the internet.

Hope you are feeling better as the new year approaches.

  4. Good for you for being willing to hear HFH's side of the story and reporting that, too. But, as you note, the proof is in the pudding. Valor's condition was improving under Rose's care, he was gaining weight and his infected penis was looking better. The pictures clearly show that he lost weight during his time at HFH. And, he quickly thrived again when Rose took him back. That's pretty clear evidence that HFH was not giving him the care he needed and deserved.

But, I look forward to hearing what they have to say. Until then, I wish you and yours a Happy New Year.

  5. It's so true to easily jump to conclusions when you don't have the whole story, and only have a portion of the story. And I'm glad you want to know the full story, and I want to know the full story, and know every little detail so I can see the full picture of this puzzle of a story. We will only know the whole story, once we put all the pieces of this puzzle together. I do know for sure, Rose rocks!

Looking forward to hearing the whole story, and the rest of the story.

  6. I guess it will be interesting to hear the other side of the story. Again you are right about the county and there is no reason they should have taken them away from Rose. I'll be interested to know why the rescue saw fit not to feed Valor, those ribs are not an apparition.

  7. Mikael, just to wish you an enjoyable and successful New Year 2009. All the best,

  8. What a sad and disturbing tale. I look forward to hearing the other side of the story and what ended up happening to the orginal abusers.

  9. Grey Horse Matters, I totally agree with what you said there! and I'll also be interested to know why they saw fit to not to feed Valor! especially since they have had the money to do it! and to why ANYONE saw fit to discontinue the wrapping of his penis, I am shocked! please fill me in to why they discontinued feeding and wrapping him, and taking care of him period! I wonder if they even watered him..

  10. Boy, I've missed a lot, will have go and start at the beginning, I suppose! Anyway, wanted to wish you A Very Happy New Year and a healthy and prosperous one as well!

  11. I wish you, and all the people and horses in your life, a very happy new year! and Rose, Kelsey, Teddy and Valor too!
