Rachel and Grandma and an Arabian Horse - Now What?

Part 1 of Rachel and Grandma and an Arabian Horse

Over at Crystal's place, Dandy has a stall with a run. He doesn't walk much in the run. He normally just stands in the sunshine otherwise he just looks outside when it's raining. His only real exercise would be Rachel lunging him.

With this injury to his shoulder, it's really best for him to be out and moving around to help stretch it out. Just stand in the stall would not be good for the already stiff shoulder. I have a large paddock here with grass so the decision was made to keep him here and outside as much as possible. while he recuperates. While we don't want him to be silly, it's important that he be moving so the staying here to be turned out everyday was determined to be our best alternative for the horse.

I got a veterinarian's certificate so we could vet the horse out from the show in Salem Oregon. We were supposed to leave this coming Wednesday. A friend will take the vet out paperwork to the show office so Colleen can recoup come of her fees.

In the meantime while we wait to see how Dandy mends, I will take my stallion, Scandalous Legacy, over for Rachel to ride for lessons. Rachel does not have the skill yet to be dealing with a stallion on the ground. But the horse is a perfect gentleman and will be fine for her to ride. This way Rachel will be able to keep working on her riding and her strength while Dandy heals.

The down side of this is I will have to be running my stallion back and forth for Rachel to ride and poor Legs (barn name for my stallion) is really out of shape.

I've only ridden the Arabian horse a couple of times all winter. I expect he'll be a good sport about it. He usually is. Stay tuned. The their first lesson will be Wednesday. Hopefully I'll get to ride him a couple of times before then.

Entries for Arabian Youth Nationals are due the first of June and so are those for Canadian Nationals. Rachel and Dandy have earned enough points to be able to show in the western division at either horse show.

We haven't decided what we are going to do about those. I'm not even sure that we will know anything enough to make a decision by that time. The actual horse shows are about a month apart though. So if Dandy doesn't come around quickly, our best bet may be the Canadian show since it is the third week of August and that gives us another month. I wish I had a crystal ball...

To be continued.......

  2. Oh, man...don't you just hate that? Congratulations to Rachel for qualifying, though. That's got to excite her all to pieces. Hopefully Dandy will be ready to go!

  3. Hope that he heals in time MiKael and it is good that you have a horse you can trust for Rachel to keep up with her side of the deal. Legs sounds wonderful, it is no easy feat to have a child riding a stallion and it is a testament to his good breeding that he knows how and when to behave. I
